'Sports Night' on stage
NRT brings three episodes of the show alive

Collegian Staff Writer

Television will be brought to the theatre this week when No Refund Theatre presents three episodes of Sports Night.

Sports Night is a television show written by Aaron Sorkin, former writer for The West Wing. The show aired on ABC for just two seasons and was later carried by Comedy Central.

Directed by Jeanette Schreiber (senior-journalism) along with associate director Ryan Teitman (senior-English), Sports Night will present the fourth, fifth and sixth episodes of the television show.

"Sports Night is a comedy," Schrieber said. "The Comedy Central tagline described it as 'a show about a show that's about sports, but not really about sports.' It is a behind the scenes look at the inner workings of a show like Sportscenter."

Two of the main characters are the anchors Casey McCall, played by Micah Winarchick, and Dan Rydell, played by Rob Huber (junior-English).

"My character is the straighter of the two," Hubersaid. "He does the deadpan comedy. He is the typical nice guy who gives everyone advice throughout the show."

Dana Whitaker, played by Hillary Cook (senior-art education and bachelor of fine arts), president of NRT, is the producer of the show.

"There is an interesting dichotomy between Dana's professional life and her personal life," Schreiber said.

"She is very good at her job, but her personal life is definitely not as well-oiled," Cook said.

Hillary Cook (senior-art education) and Micah Winarchick will appear this weekend in No Refund Threater's stage version of 'Sports Night.'

"Casey was married to a mutual friend of his and Dana and during the pilot episode Casey is getting a divorce," Schreiber said. "There is sexual tension between the two and one of the scenes we are performing, they argue about their relationship."

"The show is really more about people and their relationships," Schreiber said.

Senior associate producer Natalie Hurley, played by Read Langois (senior-chemistry) and associate producer Jeremy Goodwin, played by Kasey Soska (junior-psychology) are also co-workers with a sexual or romantic element to their relationship.

"Natalie and Jeremy definitely like each other," Schreiber said.

One of the scenes shows a conversation between Jeremy and Dan in which a sleep-deprived, Jeremy is nervously trying to get advice on where to take Natalie for a date.

"Jeanette and I have been friends for a while and we both really love Sports Night," Teitman said. "We thought it would be possible to set it up as a play. We found out that there are plenty of other people just as interested as us in the show."

"Hopefully the audience will be a really diverse crowd," Cook said. "The show is not just targeted at college kids."

Sports Night will take place at 8 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday in 111 Forum.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
