Women's golf shows rust as team struggles in opener

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's golf team couldn't find any southern hospitality in Hanahan, S.C. during the Cougar Classic.

The Nittany Lions finished 13th out of 17 teams at the three round event, which was held at the Yeamans Hall golf course.

Attempts to contact Penn State women's golf coach Denise St. Pierre and team members were unsuccessful.

The Lions had a hard time from tee-off and could not tame the 6,026 yard course before them.

However, most of the other teams struggled as well, considering that only a handful of golfers matched or shot a round under par, which was 72. Freshman Evelyn Paik came closest for the Lions by shooting a one-over par in the second round of competition.

While the Lions struggled to find their groove, Notre Dame came out of the clubhouse swinging and never looked back. The Fighting Irish won the event by six strokes. Furman University finished in second place with a score of 895 to the 889 posted by the Irish. The University of Miami came in third, two strokes behind of Furman. North Carolina State took a score of 908 into the clubhouse, while the University of Mississippi, rounded out the top five, with a 910.

Tina Miller of the Hurricanes captured the individual crown by shooting 70-69-75, for a total of 214.

Sophomore Amber Weinerth, tied for 17th overall, led the Lions with a 77-76-74 for a 227 overall. Paik tied for 21st place, one stroke behind Weinerth, with a 75-73-80 for a 228. Other Lions finishers included sophomores Katrin Wolfe, who placed 69th with a 79-80-85 for a 244, and Betsy Houseman, who finished 76th with an 86-82-81 for a 249. Senior Rosemarie Fuster finished one stroke behind Houseman in 77th by shooting an 83-84-83 with a 250.

The Lions will head out to the links again on Sept. 27th for the Lady Northern Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
