Letter to the Editor
Blantant intolerance cannot be condoned

After reading the James Bascom's letter ("Gay partner benefits not right for Penn State," Sept. 15) I was horrified and appalled at the degree of intolerance and hatred blatantly displayed by the author in his diatribe against gay rights for Penn State's faculty members.

Generalizations, such as Bascom's claim that homosexuality is a "sin against the very nature of man, considered as such by all," broadly assign to all of humanity an opinion possessed by the author singularly. It also reflected poorly on The Daily Collegian's choice of letters. Also, to assume that God condemns gays and lesbians is a ridiculous concept grossly mismatched with the belief that God loves all of his children.

For the author and many like him to damn gay people is nothing short of assuming the role of God, which I'm sure is a greater sin than I or any of "my kind" have committed. And, as far as I know, God hasn't imparted the knowledge of the "nature of man" to anyone, so to support hate with an argument of such is simply to plead ignorance and intolerance. We're all Americans; we all have rights and freedoms. Don't tell me mine aren't important.
