I was very upset when I read James Bascom's letter ("Gay partner benefits not right for Penn State," Sept. 15) that stated his disappointment over the possibility of partners of homosexual faculty members receiving benefits. I was extremely frustrated that the Collegian would even print such a letter. For the author of this letter to say that putting homosexuality on equal footing with heterosexuality is a break from 2000 years of Western civilization is ridiculous and demeaning. Welcome to the 21st century where those who frown upon homosexuality are quickly becoming the minority.
Partners of homosexual faculty members are just as worthy of receiving benefits as the husbands and wives of heterosexual faculty members. Just because they prefer same-sex relationships does not make them any less of a person than you and I. I personally think it is wonderful that Penn State is considering such action. In my opinion, the university should have considered this many years ago.
