'Terror workshop' has artistic feel

Collegian Staff Writer

The Pennsylvania Dance Theater welcomes State College to get "Inside Terrorism" from 6:30 to 9:30 tomorrow night at the Movement Arts Studio, 140 Kelly Alley, for a nine-week workshop dealing with the different aspects and views on terrorism.

Funded by the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, the workshop has been in development for about a year, workshop director Tony Coray said.

Coray is a professional dancer who has been working in the arts for 17 years. He said his background is in choreography, but has recently wanted to involve the community to create an artistic learning environment.

"I've always loved to choreograph and direct, but lately I've shifted focus to involve community members, dealing with investigation and personal issues," Coray said.

He said he started the workshop, which will culminate in an informal public performance Nov. 15, to incorporate those ideas.

"Terrorism is in the forefront right now," Coray said. "It was the perfect opportunity to use performance and community."

He said the participants would attend the weekly workshop to develop and explore the nature of terrorism from a social, political and spiritual angle as well as the impact of terrorism on daily lives.

The cost to attend the workshop is $35 and space is limited to 12 people. Coray said in order to participate people must attend from the beginning to establish a working relationship with the other attendees.

He said the workshop would involve many avenues, including visual and musical art.

"There are several levels of participation," Coray said. "There is the nine-week workshop and people who can't do that, but want to do visual or musical art can get involved."

He said anyone is welcome to attend while space is available.

Pennsylvania Dance Theater President Tina Konrath said she had been working with Coray since last spring to get the funding together.

Konrath said she is excited for the workshop to get started and while the workshop will eventually culminate in performing, there will be some written elements.

"Tony does a lot with written word," she said. "He might ask people to keep a journal throughout the workshop."

Kerri Zelman, a long-time friend of Coray's said she would be involved in the workshop and looks forward to incorporating performing with current events.

"Personally, I think it's a very timely project," she said. "The goal is to explore terror on a personal, political and spiritual level."

Zelman said she wants to explore the "silent dynamics" of terrorism aside from what is in focus now, such as domestic violence and injustices in America.

"For me, it's more about the political nature of terrorism and presenting a side we don't hear about in mainstream media."

Konrath said she does not have a figure on the number of participants yet. People who are interested in joining the workshop can contact her at 883-6907 or e-mail info@pdtdance.org.
