A speech by Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, will highlight the grand opening celebrations of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center this week.

He will focus on students' religious and cultural differences and ways to deal with diversity.

Other events will include a speech by Sue Paterno, a pre-release viewing of The Boys of Second Street Park and a health and spirituality fair.

"The whole point of this grand opening is to shed light on what happens here everyday," said Davin Carr-Chellman, assistant director of the center. "There is so much that happens here and the campus needs to know about it."

Events this week
Monday: "The Boys of Second Street Park" and discussion with Ron Berger, 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday: Sue Paterno speaks, 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday: Health and Sprituality Day, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Thursday: Arun Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, speaks, 7:30 p.m.

The Boys of the Second Street Park will be shown at 7:30 tonight in the worship hall of the spiritual center. After the movie a discussion session will be held with the filmmaker, Ron Berger.

Students from all majors are planning to watch the film and converse with Berger.

"I just want to see what it's all about," Averil Padmore (junior-advertising and public relations) said. "Just to get to speak with the filmmaker and ask him what gave him the ideas to make this film, is cool."

Keynote speaker, Paterno, who was a major benefactor for the spiritual center, will be speaking at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the worship hall. The event will also feature the Penn State Concert Choir and Glee Club.

The grand opening of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center connected to Eisenhower Chapel will be celebrated all week. Events will take place from Monday through Thursday.

Wednesday will be Health and Spirituality Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fair will include information on holistic medicine. Rustum Roy, professor of science, will answer questions about what Penn State scientists are doing to research holistic healing methods.

From 6 to 7 p.m., there will be an interfaith healing worship service.

"I hope that the programs this week and the rest of the year will be diverse enough to appeal to many different parts of students," said David Meckley, program director for Hillel. "We're trying to appeal to students from every walk of life."

The grand opening is an interfaith celebration for the opening of the building, said Meckley.

The Pasquerilla Spiritual Center-Eisenhower Chapel, now home to 47 religious organizations, is one of the largest religious centers at a public university, and has a variety of religious services throughout the week.

"I feel a lot of students are going to come to the building this week to see what kind of services they have," Padmore said. "I think there is going to be a big turnout because people want to see what this is all about."

There will be a lot of programs coming up this week and they all sound very interesting, said Padmore.
