Man convicted in trial on kidnapping charges

POTTSVILLE (AP) - A man was convicted of kidnapping for torturing someone he believed raped a relative.

Steven M. Mitchell, 42, of Orwigsburg, picked up 22-year-old Jason Moyer from a convenience store Aug. 11, 2002, and tortured him with various objects before dropping him off on a side road.

Mitchell was found guilty Wednesday of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, aggravated assault and other charges. He faces at least three and a half years in prison.

Mitchell said during his trial that Moyer had raped a woman the night before the assault.

The woman contacted police on Aug. 14, 2002, to report that Moyer had raped her. Moyer, in denying the rape allegations, testified that he had a consensual sexual encounter with the woman and his wife the night before he was assaulted. Police said they investigated the woman's accusations, but have not charged Moyer.
