Late-nighters now able to mix pizza, prayer

Collegian Staff Writer

Those looking for a little bit of prayer and praise with their pizza will find the two closer together within the next couple weeks.

Antioch International Church, formerly of 351 Calder Way, will relocate to 258 E. Beaver Ave. between Canyon Pizza, 260 E. Beaver Ave., and Grillers, 256 E. Beaver Ave.

The student-run organization, which is affiliated with Penn State, hopes to open its doors on Sept. 22.

"I think it will bring light and new purpose to that area," Pastor Bruce Eveleth said. "A lot of students go through hard times in college, and we are here to help."

Eveleth said the construction is progressing rapidly and Antioch is very excited about its new location.

The organization's director, Penn State alumnus Jason Wendle, said the reason for moving into Beaver Canyon is to go where students are, instead of having students come to them.

"We don't want to separate ourselves from people," Wendle said. "We want to meet students where they are."

Although permanent hours have not yet been set, Wendle said he hopes to stay open through 2 a.m. to attract those looking for something to do after bars close.

"Everyone is welcome to come in and be a part of the group," Wendle said. "This can be an alternative place to hang out late at night."

Wendle said the group is composed of about 75 people who like to worship together and help others through charitable work.

Geoff Ingersoll (senior-English) said the high-traffic area may help attract more people.

"It is a good move on their part; they may get more people because of their location," Ingersoll said.

But some see the group's new location as a possible setback.

"I'm indifferent to their location and their organization, but being next to Canyon Pizza may cause a problem," Jon Hassinger (senior-telecommunications) said.

Wendle said the group is not naive about the threat of vandalism and theft, and will take proper precautions to ensure order.

State College recently installed surveillance cameras at three intersections on Beaver Avenue. One is near where Antioch plans to meet.

Mike Fry, manager of Canyon Pizza, said he welcomes the addition.

"That area has been empty for a while," Fry said.

Roeshot Construction, 2625 Carolean Industrial Drive, has been working on the project for the past six weeks.

"We've fireproofed the inside and installed three handicapped bathrooms," said David Roeshot, general contractor.

Roeshot said past businesses at that location have included rental unions and a computer accessory store.

More information on the group can be found at www.antiochnews.net.
