Hundreds of students thinking about "going Greek" attended a recruitment fair yesterday, hoping to forge an initial bond with a potential fraternity or sorority.
Twenty of the 22 sororities and all 51 fraternities at Penn State were present at the event on the HUB lawn, hosted by Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Council.
"For younger students, getting involved in Greek life helps to shrink this large university," said Jozef Kuzmkowski (senior-marketing), IFC's vice president of membership. "It allows you to become a part of something much bigger than yourself; it's a family."
Most of the students who attended were freshmen; however, the event was open to all who were interested.
At the beginning of each semester, fraternities and sororities open their doors to students looking to get involved with service projects and leadership opportunities.
"It's very important for freshmen to get involved in Greek life," said Rob Pennington (senior-public relations), a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, 351 E. Fairmount Ave. "We provide various activities, leadership opportunities and true brotherhood."
While getting involved with Greek life can give students the chance to take on leadership roles and complete community service, many choose to get involved to meet new people.
"I am looking into getting involved in a fraternity and having fun," Andrew Moses (freshman-business management) said. "I am just keeping an open mind right now."
There were many who did not have interest in a certain sorority or fraternity, but others felt differently.
Danielle Pretsfelder (freshman-theatre and psychology) said the day provided more time to get to know the members of Alpha Omicron Pi, Hiester Hall, a sorority in which she has a strong interest.
"I met the girls here over the summer and I really liked them," she said. "Now I am looking to get more information and possibly get involved with them."
For those unsure of Greek life Panhellenic President Mary Kaye Jacono offered some advice .
"I never thought a sorority would be something for me, but I am so glad I did it," she said. "If I had not joined, I would have missed out on so many things that have helped to shape my experience here."
