Letter to the Editor
Consent forms for sex just around the corner

As a responsible citizen, I suggest that the Collegian publish the following advisory for all of those potential rapists (otherwise known as "men") out there.

"Pay attention, gentlemen! Now that the party season is officially underway, you should strongly consider tucking a little something into your wallets before you go out this weekend. No, I'm not talking about a condom; I'm talking about your Carnal Consent Form. As ill equipped as you are to communicate with the opposite sex, you need to show a potential partner this form to clearly express your desires, and her signature on it to convey her permission. This establishes a 'contract of consent,' securing your status as a Penn State student and a free citizen for another day."

Of course, this sounds absurd to most people, but judging by the actions of Penn State Judicial Affairs, as well as several recent letters to the editor, nothing less than a signed contract will be considered sufficient proof of consent when a man must prove his innocence.

As both a man and a United States citizen, I find Penn State's guilty-until-proven-innocent approach towards individuals like Anwar Phillips an affront to the principles of justice. But more frightening are sentiments like those of Jill Woods ("Verdict in Phillips trial will hurt future victims," Sept. 2). She apparently believes that the acquittal of Phillips represents a failing of the justice system, and that a two semester postponement of his life and career was insufficient punishment for a crime he did not commit.
