Student gets concussion after scuffle Sunday night

A Penn State student was taken to Centre Community Hospital yesterday after a fight with about four other male suspects, one of whom was taken into custody.

Jason S. Rodriguez was arraigned before District Justice Bradley Lunsford at 10 a.m. yesterday and placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 10 at Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.

He is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.

Police responding to a reported assault found Jeffrey Hughey unconscious at about 1 a.m. in front of The Diplomat, 329 E. Beaver Ave., according to court documents.

Hughey was diagnosed with a concussion and received several stitches for lacerations on his lip and head.

A clinical supervisor at the hospital said Hughey was not admitted and was unable to confirm whether he was taken to the hospital temporarily for treatment.

According to police documents, the following occurred at about 1 a.m.:

Witnesses said Hughey fell to the ground after being punched twice by a male suspect.

After knocking him to the ground, about four male suspects kicked him repeatedly in the head.

Brian Stumpf, another student, told police he and Hughey were walking near The Diplomat when two of the male suspects started a verbal argument with them.

Stumpf said one of the suspects, who witnesses identified as Rodriguez, made a call on his cell phone to friends.

After the call, about three or four male suspects came out of The Diplomat, and Rodriguez knocked Hughey to the ground, police said.

Stumpf told police he tackled Rodriguez at the beginning of the fight.

When it ended, Hughey was lying motionless in the street with blood flowing from his head.

Stumpf declined to comment about the incident.

Witnesses said all suspects fled before police arrived.

However, as police were still speaking to witnesses at the scene, Rodriguez walked by and picked up a broken necklace off the sidewalk.

Witnesses alerted the officer that Rodriguez was involved in the assault, and police transported him to their department for questioning.

According to the document, Rodriguez had an alcoholic odor on his breath and also had bloodshot, watery eyes.

He was wearing a different shirt than the one witnesses described him as wearing during the fight.
