Newcomers to the State College music scene and returning regulars alike can expect world-class electronica entertainment tonight at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., courtesy of DJ Junior Sanchez and opening act Output.
Dave Wells, director of operations for the Crowbar, said he believes there is a bit of an underground electronica scene in State College. He usually targets that audience with at least one show per semester.
"It's (electronica music) not one of our specialties, to be honest," said Ken Kubala, manager of City Lights Records, 316 E. College Ave.
Most of the store's staff is unfamiliar with that particular style.
Nonetheless, Kubala maintains that Sanchez is certainly a well-known performer.
"The guy's a world-class DJ," Wells said. "He does such a clever mix."
Junior has said one of the main sources of his musical flexibility was his upbringing.
Hailing from Brazil and raised all over New Jersey, he was exposed to a wide variety of musical tastes.
As a result, he learned at an early age to appreciate how diverse styles of music can work together.
Junior's ambition led him to become very well known in the New York City underground club scene while still in his teens.
His first solo effort, Junior Sanchez Presents The Bionic Traxx, was released in early 1996, and was a major creative breakthrough, according to reviews.
Having finally been given access to the equipment he'd long sought, he was able to develop his own distinct sound.
Currently, Sanchez is focusing on projects for his own Cube Recordings label.
In particular he is producing Output, his opening act tonight at the Crowbar.
Parag Bhandari of the Urban Groove Network, the company handling promotion for Junior's tour, calls Output a rock/house endeavor.
The three-piece group combines driving guitar licks with the pulsing beats of dance music, topped off with Junior's powerful vocals.
Bhandari said the band is not as experimental as those running in a similar vein, such as the New Deal or the Disco Biscuits, but rather has more of a pop sound.
"Think of Duran Duran meets the Clash," he said.
Regardless of the format, Wells expects Sanchez to be at the top of his game in both incarnations, and encourages fans of electronica to take advantage of this event.
"We're really happy to have him in the room," Wells said.
