Tutoring services

The Center for Public Speaking and Civic Engagement

7 Sparks
Hours:
Sunday through Wednesday, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Thursday:1 to 4 p.m.

Student tutors offer feedback on public speaking strategies and selecting a topic for and writing a speech.


Language Center

7 Sparks

The center provides peer tutoring for French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese.

It also provides out-of-class materials for students in foreign language programs. Instructors may leave audio and video cassettes.


Learning Skills

Call 865-1841 for an appointment.

Consultants can assist students in improving note taking, reading comprehension, time management and test taking skills.


Math Center

The center provides help for students with problems in courses from Math 002 to Math 200 and also conducts evening midterm exam review sessions for some courses.


Sperling/Cohen Tutoring Program

Provides free tutoring in Math 140 and 141.

Groups of three to five students meet twice a week with specially trained tutors to discuss any difficulties they are having with homework assignments or other aspects of the course.

Tutoring is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications and information are available in 108 Whitmore, 865-7528.


Supplemental Instruction

Call 865-1841 for an appointment.

SI leaders are students who have taken a course before and lead tutoring sessions about the class.

These services are offered in conjunction mostly with first-year math and science courses that have been identified as difficult.


Technology Tutoring

7 Sparks

Technology tutoring offers one-on-one and group tutoring in basic computer skills, including e-mail programs, portfolios and Web publishing.


Tutoring Center

Requests for a tutor can be submitted online at www.ulc.psu.edu.

The Center offers free help in a variety of General Education courses. Students struggling in classes from history to biology can meet with peer tutors for help.

The center heads many tutorial programs in various Penn State colleges, which are designed to help students think about their writing. The center also offers a one-credit tutorial class, English 005 (Writing Tutorial), with certain English classes to provide one-on-one instruction for those who need extra help.
