This past spring members of the Interfraternity Council acted within their governance powers to deny recognition to Sigma Alpha Epsilon. It was a responsible move that improved the image and credibility of the greek community. Unfortunately the decision was overturned because of several loopholes deemed legitimate by the Student Organization Advisory Board (independent of IFC).
This was in no way the fault of the council members. Now that SAE has been readmitted, IFC members should be vigilant in holding SAE accountable for their actions. Remind the fraternity that they are on thin ice.
They dragged the greek community and every letter-bearing organization through the mud. My experience as a fraternity member was a huge part of my life as undergrad and even now as an alumnus.
Learning professional skills within my fraternity was as equally valuable as my four years of academic coursework. To every new freshman, don't let the prior actions of SAE discourage you from joining a greek organization. There are plenty of other fraternities that hold higher moral standards and practice personal accountability.
To the IFC, hold them accountable this year if they can't do this for themselves.
