Men's rugby team shows PSU pride on popular game show 'Price Is Right'

While everyone was enjoying the beaches and the warm weather over spring break, the Penn State men's rugby team was enjoying one of America's favorite game shows.

The entire team traveled to California over the break to brush up on their rugby skills and after a match in Los Angeles, the team decided that it wanted to attend a taping of The Price Is Right. On Thursday, March 13 at 1 a.m. the team sat outside the gates of The Price Is Right until 7 a.m. when the gates opened. After waiting some more and getting tickets, everyone went through a 10-second interview. After going through the interviews, senior captain Jason Fisher and Brent Ilgen thought they would be shoo-ins for contestants because of their absolute love for the show. However, freshman Justin Hundley's brief interview would prove to be crucial.

"After my interview the guy said, 'I had no idea what you said but it sounded good,' " Hundley said.

After the original four were called down, Price Is Right announcer Rod Roddy said his famous words: "Justin Hundley, come on down. You're the next contestant on The Price Is Right."

"It was one of the most nervous times of my life," Hundley said. "I have never been so nervous before. I got swamped as soon as my name was called because all of our guys were around me and they picked me up and they were going absolutely nuts." Adorned with a shirt that read "Penn State Rugby Loves Barker's Beauties," Hundley was in the spotlight. After a couple bids, he finally won a train set and a trip onto the stage.

"The coaches thought it was great," Penn State men's rugby forwards coach Don Ferrell said. "We were happy that something good happened to Justin because we felt bad that he couldn't play over break because of his injury. He was the perfect kid to get up on there because he is a super nice young man." After playing one of the games, Hundley got his big opportunity to spin the wheel and see if he could advance to the Showcase. Although he would find out that luck with the big wheel was not on his side.

"I spun the wheel, but it shafted me twice," Hundley said. "It was just a fun experience and I had a good time." With the show being taped in a small venue, the Ruggers brought the house down with their constant noise.

"During the commercial break [Bob Barker] spoke to us a lot because we were probably the rowdiest group in the crowd," Hundley said. "We were keeping the place alive." Ferrell said that since Justin is not a big kid, Barker was teasing him.

"Bob Barker asked him that he thought rugby players are suppose to be big and Justin apparently gave him the double-bicep flex on stage," he said.

The taping featuring the rugby team is scheduled to air on Wednesday June 25 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on CBS.

"It was a great time and it was a lot of fun to be there," Fisher said.
