Integrity compromised when Phillips played

Just as Roman generals were paraded through the streets of Rome in celebration of victory, Joe Paterno will one day soon celebrate in his own triumph. There is much controversy surrounding Paterno at this time, and it is justified.

The Anwar Phillips situation has cast a bad light on the football program and Penn State in general. I think most of us agree that Phillips should not have been allowed to play in the bowl game; after all, he had accepted responsibility for sexually assaulting another student.

Curtis Enis was not allowed to play for accepting a suit; Joe Jurevicious sidelined for missing classes. Phillips, though, after being sanctioned by the university, was allowed to wear the blue and white.

What was Paterno thinking? It was obviously a poor decision, but it will be erased from our memory when Beaver Stadium is filled with 108,000 people next fall, right? It is like the "bread and circuses" of the Roman Empire: give them football and beer and they won't question you -- at least those that care more about football than the integrity and credibility of a great coach.
