A Penn State student and part-time Information and Technology Services (ITS) employee was arraigned Tuesday on multiple charges of theft after stealing computer hardware from two university labs and selling it on eBay, Penn State Police Services said.

Steven Donghyun Kim, 23, of 670-D E. Prospect Ave., faces 78 counts of theft by unlawful taking, 78 counts of criminal mischief, two counts of burglary, two counts of criminal mischief and one count of receiving stolen property. District Justice Carmine Prestia released Kim Tuesday on his own recognizance.

Computer hardware from the Cedar Building and South Chambers Building labs, including 78 Pentium 4 processor chips and 167 memory boards, was discovered missing March 27.

Police Supervisor Clifford Lutz said ITS became suspicious of Kim after he stopped coming to work after the thefts. They also found Kim had logged onto the computers in both labs before the theft, but he had stopped using the labs after the theft.

ITS found Kim was the only one who had logged onto computers in both labs in the days prior to the theft. ITS and police traced Kim's username on eBay, where he sold the equipment to a buyer in California, Lutz said. Police found the buyer and discovered the hardware was the missing equipment, Lutz said.

Earlier in the investigation, police said they were looking for more than one suspect, given the amount of hardware stolen. But Lutz said Kim acted alone and has cooperated with police since being interviewed with his attorney present on April 10.
