Hawg riders lend a hand to local lung association

For The Collegian

Bikers and philanthropists might not seem to go together, but the American Lung Association teamed up with the #1 Cycle Center Harley-Davidson/Buell, 107 Yearicks Blvd., Centre Hall, to raise money for charity this weekend.

The event was a fashion show of motorcycle apparel.

The show, "Leather for Lungs," displayed everything from Harley-Davidson T-shirts and boots to FXRG wear. FXRG wear is waterproof, well-insulated and can be plugged into a battery to remain warm.

"You have to have really warm clothing when you are riding for eight hours in 20-degree weather," Erica Underhill, the center's events coordinator, said. "One girl bought FXRG wear for her father because he plows snow."

Twenty-three volunteers participated in the event, including employees, customers, local hawg chapter members and American Lung Association volunteers.

"We couldn't have done it without the volunteers," Underhill said. "It was great of them to take time out of their weekend to come help out."

The volunteers sported every look from riding to casual to professional.

Volunteer Curt Stump said the rainy day and the Blue-White game might have kept some people away.

"Those that didn't come lost out because we had fun," he said.

There was also a silent auction of items donated by local businesses ranging from Boal Museum tickets to an autographed baseball by Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees.

Yesterday the center had a poker run, which was a 90-mile ride from State College to Prospector's Allegheny Rib Company, 2080 Cato Ave.

"Whether you're riding a Kowasaki, Suzuki or a Harley, you just like to ride. It builds camaraderie," Underhill said.

Raffle tickets to benefit the charity will be on sale until tomorrow.

"Here at the cycle center, we raise about $10,000 for area charities," Underhill said. "We raise above and beyond what the dealership makes."
