March route reinforced fraternity stereotypes
As a member of the Penn State community, I was happy to see that the annual Take Back the Night march was to be held this week. However, as a member of the greek community, I was dismayed to learn that the route taken by the marchers went out of its way to pass fraternity houses while neglecting other areas of State College. Roughly 10 percent of the Penn State community is greek, but the march chose to focus all of its attention on fraternity houses. Why is it that the major apartment complexes were excluded from the march? By singling out fraternity houses as the sole area in which the night needed reclaimation the organizers of the event are proliferating the stereotype that greek men are rapists; an entirely undeserved and unsubstantiated claim. While I wholeheartedly support Take Back the Night, I wish that the route of the march were not so biased toward fraternity members. By choosing to exclude apartment complexes from the march, its organizers have effectively taken the emphasis off of the crime itself and placed it on a small percentage of the student body. Next year, march past the fraternity houses -- I am sure that the procession will be greeted with the same white candles with which it is welcomed every year -- but march through Beaver Canyon as well. Sexual assault is a terrible crime and it is counter productive to the event to pretend that it happens only on Fraternity Row. Nick Cummins
