Security tight for Blue-White

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State Police Services said it plans to have additional patrols for tomorrow's Blue-White game and the daylong Movin' On concert, which promise to draw thousands of visitors to State College.

Steve Shelow, deputy director of Penn State police, said about 80 full-time and student auxiliary officers will work in intersections and direct traffic as well as patrol inside Beaver Stadium.

While there will be no special traffic patterns, Police Supervisor Stewart Neff said the portion of Curtin Road from University Drive to Porter Road will be closed to traffic from about noon until the game ends.

Neff said normal security measures will be in place, and no backpacks, knapsacks, umbrellas or packages larger than 8.5 by 11 inches will be allowed in the stadium.

Added security will also be in place for tonight's sold-out 50 Cent concert at the Bryce Jordan Center, Neff said.

There will be no place to store bags or packages, so people are asked not to bring them, or they will have to take them to their car or residence before entering.

Shelow said the game usually draws between 35,000 and 50,000 spectators, which is about half of what a regular season game draws.

"The atmosphere is a little more laid-back," Shelow said. "My sense is the type of fan the Blue-White game attracts is people who wouldn't normally have the opportunity to attend a game."

Sgt. John Wilson of the State College Police Department said while police will add patrols, the game and concert do not create significant problems.

"Festivities before and after Blue-White games always create a need for police presence," Wilson said. "But it tends to be more low-key and less of a party atmosphere than fall games."

Both police departments agreed most incidents that occur are alcohol-related.

Steve Kreider, co-chair of the Movin' On concert, said there will be about 150 volunteer security personnel at the show, which begins at noon and lasts through the night.

Kreider said there will also be Penn State police personnel and auxiliary officers scattered throughout the crowd who will be in communication with the show's security personnel.

The concert typically draws a crowd between 12,000 and 15,000 people, with many coming and going through the day, Kreider said.

He said there are usually few reported incidents at the show.
