Penn State freshman wrestler A.J. Cummins will miss a competition this weekend because of injuries he received in an altercation that took place in the early morning hours of April 13.
Penn State assistant sports information director Brian Siegrist confirmed Cummins would not be able to participate in the 184-pound bracket of the University Nationals and Fila Cadet Nationals because of a broken cheekbone and fractured orbital bone.
The altercation took place at 445 E. Foster Ave between 2 and 2:30 a.m., police said. Several football teammembers were present, but involvement, if any, has not been determined. Siegrist said Cummins should be able to compete for Penn State during the 2003-2004 season.
"I would think so," Siegrist said. "I would expect him to."
Siegrist said Cummins' brother, Ryan, a senior tri-captain on the wrestling team, was also injured during the altercation. The 197-pounder suffered a broken nose in the incident.
The State College Police Department is investigating the incident, which was alcohol-related, according to a police statement on Monday.
Police said the two men reported they were leaving a party at 445 E. Foster Ave. when several men assaulted them following a brief verbal exchange. The assailants remain unidentified.
Siegrist said he could not comment on whether any disciplinary action would be taken against the wrestlers.
The police have no new information, Sgt. John Wilson said.
A.J. Cummins transferred to Penn State after spending the fall semester at West Chester University, where he was a member of the football team.
Siegrist said 11 Penn State wrestlers, including All-Americans Pat Cummins and Josh Moore, will wrestle in the competition.
