Student-run radio station WKPS-FM (The Lion 90.7) will be getting a new home this summer at the HUB-Robeson Center.
The station, which is now based in the James Building, 123 S. Burrowes St., will be moving into the space by the fish tank that now holds the arcade room sometime this July, Michael Fecht, The Lion general manager, said. The new studio will have a glass window so people can see what is happening on the air.
Fecht said he thinks the move will be beneficial to the radio station.
"It's just the exposure," Fecht said.
"We're going to have 40,000 students
walking by, looking at our radio station."
The Lion's current location has not been as visible, Fecht said. "We get no exposure there. It's like out at the boondocks," he said.
Fortunately for Fecht, the College of Communications could no longer house the radio station in the James Building.
"The College of Communications needed us out of there, so we needed a place to move," Fecht said.
"At first, we were going to move into the Grange Building, but we got Penn State to move us into the HUB for all the advantages of us moving there."
Several students agreed with Fecht, saying more people will know about the radio station thanks to its new location.
"I don't see too many people using the arcade," Stephen Cuppett (senior-computer science) said. "I think it will keep [the radio station] more connected with what's going on on campus."
An Shih (senior-electrical engineering) likes the fact people will be able to see what is going on inside the studio.
"If they have a clear door or something so people could see inside, I think that would be interesting," Shih said.
While the station is changing its location, it is not changing its programming. Fecht said the radio station will use its new central location to better serve students.
"Our goal is to service the community. We want to promote students and promote diversity," he said.
Fecht said the radio station helps foster a sense of diversity by playing a wide variety of music, including classic rock, urban music, Latin music, metal and electronica.
