Penn State's Glee Club to celebrate anniversary with concert

Collegian Staff Writer

This Blue and White weekend, take part in another Penn State tradition besides football. The Penn State Glee Club will perform the 20th anniversary of the Blue and White Concert.

The Glee Club will perform pieces from the Homecoming Concert, Spring Tour concerts, as well as some new pieces.

"When you hear of a choral concert you think of your high school choral group, but the Glee Club is very exciting," said Bruce Trinkley, professor of music and director of the Glee Club. "The group will perform classic pieces designed for men's voices of the 20th century."

The Blue and White Concert is composed of mostly serious pieces along with a few lighter pieces -- it has "a wonderful mixed bag of repertoire," Trinkley said.

One selection within the "premiere performance" is "A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map."

It is based on a poem by British poet Stephen Spender and music by U.S. composer Sam Barber. Spender wrote this piece after he was a war correspondent and experienced a comrade killed in war.

This piece is timely in light of the current situation between the United States and Iraq, and paints a devastating picture of what happens in war, Trinkley said.

Along with this piece there will also be selections from Abbey Road, by the Beatles, along with traditional Penn State songs.

"At the end of the concert, the Glee Club performs Penn State songs and "Alma Mater," and alumni are invited to join and sing on stage," said Nate Crowther (senior-geoscience)

"It always gets the crowd going."

Selections will also be performed by the Hi-Lo's, a group of 15 men who perform a lighter repertoire of acapella, and the Varsity Quartets, who perform acapella to contemporary rock pieces.

It may be a milestone for the Blue and White Concert, but there is also another deeper meaning of the concert among the members of the Glee Club. It will be the last concert for Frank Worrell, who has been the associate director of the group for six years.

A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Worrell said he has always been involved with music since he was very young and has a background in directing choral concerts.

"When I came to Penn State I discovered the School of Music was right across the street, so I decided to continue my love of music, along with doing something different than my usual professor stuff," said Worrell, who is also an associate professor in the psychology department. "It's a nice balance, and I feel people should give service into areas you can give."

Worrell is leaving to accept a position at the University of California at Berkeley, his alma mater.

"It's wonderful being a part of a group with a long tradition, and I think that all male groups have a very different character than mixed choruses or women's choruses," he said.

Worrell said he will miss the Glee Club tremendously, and the club has taught him patience, which keeps him young.

The Glee Club is also celebrating 114 years as a Penn State student organization. The club is made up of 60 men and is very diverse, with participants from all majors. Only a few are music majors, said Steve Morgan (junior-hotel, restaurant and institution management).

"The club has a good artistic value, but the entertainment value is what we focus on," said Brad Shockey (senior-management science and information systems), who has been involved with the Glee Club for eight semesters. "We try to sound, and do sound, like a great male choir."

The show is at 8 p.m. Saturday in Schwab Auditorium, and tickets are required. Student tickets are $3 and General Admission tickets are $7.

Tickets are available at the Eisenhower Ticket Center and the Arts Ticket Center in the HUB-Robeson Center.
