The State College Police Department confirmed yesterday that it is investigating an altercation involving members of the Penn State wrestling team, and possibly the football team.
Two wrestlers were treated at Centre Community Hospital after an assault between 2 and 2:30 a.m. outside a residence at 445 E. Foster Ave. on April 13, according to a police press release. The release labeled the incident as "alcohol-related" and said it did not involve weapons.
The statement said the assailants were unknown at the time. "Several people were outside of the house at the time of the assault, including several members of the Penn State football team. The extent of the participation by them, if any, has yet to be determined," the release said.
Lt. Diane Conrad said charges may stem from the investigation, but it is too soon to name those involved.
Penn State Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson said football coach Joe Paterno was not available for comment. Nelson said he assumes wrestling coach Troy Sunderland and Paterno know of the investigation, but did not know if athletes involved are still practicing.
According to the police statement, the following happened in early morning hours of April 13: The students reported they were leaving a party at the East Foster Avenue house when several men assaulted them after a brief verbal exchange. The hospital notified police when the victims arrived.
A person who answered the phone at 445 E. Foster Ave. confirmed the incident happened in the yard, but said that no residents were involved and had no comment.
