Club baseball pitcher Fagerstein throws no-hitter

Collegian Staff Writer

Mark Fagerstein did not feel any added pressure when he took the mound in the top of the fifth inning Wednesday evening. At that point he had held Bucknell to no hits during four innings of work

After retiring the Bisons in order, he thought he had two more innings of work left. However, when his team scored a run in the bottom of the fifth forcing the ten-run rule the Lion had officially pitched a no-hitter.

The pitching performance helped propel the Lions to sweeping the doubleheader, 10-0 and 12-0.

"It felt really good to pitch a no-hitter," Fagerstein said. "And to have Worm [Lion's pitcher Bill Lippert] come in after that and throw a spectacular game it was great."

Fagerstein's (3-0) final line for the day was five innings pitched, two walks, no runs and no hits.

Fagerstein gave much of the credit for his performance to Lions catcher John Felix.

"He called a great game," Fagerstein said. "There were times when I wanted to throw a fastball and he called for a change-up and the change-up worked out."

Lippert's (1-1) performance in the second game of the doubleheader was almost as dazzling as Fagerstein.

Lippert tossed a shutout in five innings giving up two hits and two walks.

"You couldn't ask for more pitching," Lions coach Phil Pinkasavage said.

The team's pitching staff has been dominant all season. While the Lions pitching staff have given up 3.75 runs per game, they have given up just three runs in conference play.

The club team's hitters also had big games Wednesday.

Jason Bunda led the assault going 4-5 on the day.

The outfielder tripled and homered in the first game en route to driving in five runs. During the second half of the doubleheader, Bunda had two hits and scored three runs.

Outfielder Dan Hileman also had a big day knocking in three runs with five hits, three runs scored.

Third baseman Dan Day tripled twice in the first game, and scored four runs Wednesday.

The Lions faced Bucknell last weekend as well, beating the Bisons 7-1 and 6-2.

"We were a little lackadaisical on Sunday," catcher Nate Birtwell said. "We were more up beat yesterday. We seem to be getting back into form."

The Lions are 8-4 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.

The team will play a doubleheader at Rutgers this weekend starting at noon Saturday and another twinbill Sunday morning at 9.
