Letter to the Editor
USG Senate fulfilled some goals this year

As a former Town Senator of the 33rd Congress, I must say that I was appalled at how the members of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) were portrayed in "USG wrap-up: This year's representatives were generally ineffective" (April 16 editorial).

It is quite a shame how student leaders, who dedicated large portions of their lives to improving the lives of students, can be criticized for not doing enough. I will admit, there was a great deal of internal redevelopment. However, there are many projects that were worked on that received no recognition, but this does not mean that change has not taken place.

The Senate was successful in researching lighting issues, working to improve Rec Sports, coordinating Unity Week, lobbying against surveillance cameras downtown, lobbying Harrisburg for increased state appropriations and for House Bill 1493, increasing voter registration, working with the Off-Campus Student Union (OCSU), helping to decrease congestion in the HUB during eating hours and many more.

In other parts of USG: The OCSU had a year of strategic planning, and interviews are now being held for positions next year. There was a first year seminar, taught to freshman by leaders within USG, on how to become successful student leaders themselves. The executives were anything but "wishy-washy." Their projects were successful and they took and will still take time to be fully implemented. Remember, it takes much less courage to criticize for what people did not do, than to actually get involved and be a part of the whole process.
