Spanier hasn't been clear on Phillips case

I recently read the following opinions from Penn State President Graham Spanier regarding the case of Anwar Phillips.

From the Associated Press on April 3: Spanier said "the university handled it reasonably well, even though there may have been some miscommunication." From the Associated Press on April 10: Spanier said "There is a legitimate question as to whether an athlete should be allowed to compete at all after a suspension has been adjudicated, regardless of when the suspension formally takes effect. My own view is that students should not be allowed to participate in university activities in such circumstances."

Regardless of my opinion on the Phillips situation, I am furious at Spanier's duplicity. While I was initially impressed with Spanier, between this incident and his ineffectual prohibitionism, he has lost the credibility to be the president of our fine university. It is time the Board of Trustees start looking for a new president. If it is necessary to continue the tradition of naming buildings for former mediocre presidents (e.g. the Bryce Jordan Center) I suggest the Spanier Teetotaler Waffle House.
