Public SRTEs will lead to more grade inflation
Student Rating of Teaching Effectiveness (SRTE) results need to be kept private ("Spanier now considering releasing SRTE results," April 17 article). SRTEs are the main form of feedback for administrators to identify the effectiveness of teachers and should only be used for this purpose. It has been shown that grade inflation became a problem with the introduction of SRTEs and with the results being made public this will become a severe problem. I want an A in a class to be a distinguished mark on my transcript but with grade inflation this is happening less and less. The Daily Jolt has a course evaluator if people really want a feel for professors and classes, but even this is unnecessary. I know people in my major that I can find out about teachers and classes from, and I have other friends to ask about general education courses. My concern with releasing SRTE results is that grades will be inflated. A secondary problem that may or may not happen is that they will be formatted to what students want to know, not need to know, such as "How easy is it to get an A?" I sincerely hope that President Spanier will return to his former opinion and keep SRTEs private. Andy Hackett
