Uncertainty about transferring credits to Penn State might almost be over. The university has recently started a Web site that will allow students to determine if courses taken at other institutions can transfer here.
The site can be accesssed from the Undergraduate Admissions Web site (www.psu.edu/admissions) on the link "Evaluate Transfer Courses." The site allows students to enter information about courses at other universities and to find Penn State courses that have equivalents at other universities.
This service will benefit students by allowing them to determine if credits taken somewhere else will count toward their Penn State degrees. Previously, students who transferred from other universities or took courses at other institutions ran the risk of having to repeat courses because they did not fall in line with Penn State's requirements for course substitution.
This site will allow students to avoid this frustration, for the most part. Some courses have not been evaluated by the university, and students interested in them have to go to the Admissions Office in Shields Building and fill out a written evaluation form.
It is an especially valuable service at this time of year, as many students are looking to take summer classes near their homes. The Web site will allow them to take classes that they know will be applicable to their degree, and might motivate more students to take classes.
The admissions office should be credited for implementing this resource, which is a good step toward making the university more "student-centered."
