Entertainment and enlightenment were on the agenda last night in the Waring Commons study lounge for the program "Rap, Roots and Amnesia: Puerto Rican Culture and Latino Identity."

A large Silver Maple tree fell across South Burrowes Street last night, crushing one vehicle and closing the street for several hours.

In recent statements, Penn State President Graham Spanier said he has become more receptive to the idea of letting students see data from the teacher evaluations collected each semester.

A kitchen grease fire touched off a blaze that heavily damaged a Centre Hall landmark yesterday and kept firefighters battling for hours to bring it under control.

Students who rely on public transportation may be waiting even longer for a bus.

A Penn State student who allegedly entered an unlocked home and refused to leave waived his preliminary hearing yesterday in Centre County Courthouse, Bellefonte.

When employees at Forever Broadcasting began accepting donations for the Shoeboxes for Soldiers campaign, few expected such a huge community response.

A Penn State student who was arrested April after a disturbance in Simmons Hall waived his preliminary hearing yesterday in Centre County Courthouse, Bellefonte.

State College couple charged with multiple counts of rape and endangering the welfare of children were bound over for trial yesterday in Centre County Courthouse, Bellefonte.

SPORTS

Calling Joe Paterno's practices media-friendly is like calling Carson Daly cool.

"She's a freshman, let's see what she can do," said Penn State assistant women's gymnastics coach Bill Lorenz, as he and coach Steve Shephard exchanged glances of skepticism and doubt.

Tonight, several Penn State football players and coaches will take the field. But they won't be taking snaps, breaking through the defensive line, or setting up plays against a Big Ten opponent.

It's grotesquely fitting that it turned out this way for Shawn Mayer and Gus Felder.

Seven members of the Penn State Icers ACHA Div. I championship team were named All-Americans yesterday.

An NCAA tournament berth is still a possibility for the Penn State men's lacrosse team.

With every game it has gotten worse.

ARTS

Penn State students and museum-goers alike have one last chance this weekend to experience the works of early 20th century artist John Covert.

In a press release about The ShakeDowns, it points to the current state of the music industry, in which there has been a so-called "rock revival."

It has become chic in modern Tarantino-inspired cinema to glorify screen violence with ultra-hip stylistics while keeping an emotional distance from the victims. It is refreshing then to look back at Three Kings, a post-Pulp Fiction Gulf War fable that uses equally impressive techniques to show the horror, rather than the glamour, of bloodshed.

Sometimes a band can be a little contradictory.

A couple of cowboys, two waitresses, a sheriff, a professor, a bus driver and a lounge singer -- it almost sounds like the cast of Gilligan's Island.

Local and national female artists will celebrate women's issues Monday and Tuesday evening.

When Yanni came to The Bryce Jordan Center last month his show was heavily advertised around campus.

Original music can be hard to find in State College, but that won't stop the members of Kiva from creating their own music.

The Central Pennsylvania Country Dance Association announces that they are holding a Contra Dance at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the State College Friends School, 1900 University Drive. Maureen Vivino, a country dance caller from Ithaca, N.Y., will be joined by local musicians Steele Hollow.

The Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania is now accepting registrations for summer art camps for children and teens. Each camp meets from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Open Studio, 824 Pike St., Lemont.
