Two of the 1,097 athletes who participate in sports at Penn State's 14 Commonwealth Campuses were acknowledged yesterday when they were presented with the John Elgi Outstanding Athlete Award. Christine Kelly from the Delaware County Campus and Jonas Lau from the York Campus received the award as a result of their successes both on and off the playing surface.
The John Elgi Outstanding Student-Athlete Award was established in honor of Assistant Professor John Elgi, in recognition of his long dedication and devotion to Penn State, where he served as a student, athlete, faculty member and coach.
Nominees must obtain a 3.0 grade-point average, play a varsity sport, and be involved in the community.
Commonwealth Campuses Athletic Director John Fritz presented the award at a ceremony at the Nittany Lion Inn.
Kelly (sophomore-urban education) is a two-sport athlete who participates in basketball and volleyball, though most of her success comes on the volleyball court. She was the captain of the volleyball team, as well as an Eastern Pennsylvania Commonwealth Campus All Conference, during her sophomore year.
"She's an outstanding athlete and a wonderful spirit leader," said Tiz Griffith, athletic director at Penn State Delaware County. "She is a treat to be around."
Off the court, Kelly maintains a 3.35 GPA, serves as a Lion Ambassador, is involved with THON, and is a volunteer track coach for her church group.
"I've had a great time at Penn State, Delaware County the past two years," Kelly said.
"I am honored to have received the Elgi Award."
With Penn State Delaware County having expanded its volleyball from a two-year program to a four-year program, Kelly said she plans to stay at the campus.
"I'm looking forward to the next two years," she said. "I won't be going up to main campus; I'm more of a home person."
Lau (sophomore-education) was recognized for his success on the basketball court as well as his involvement in the community and his aspiring attitude.
"He's one of those students who goes about things with quiet intensity and determination," said Kerry Magni, athletic director at Penn State York. "He's a special kid to be around."
Lau was an All-Academic and All-Conference basketball player the past two seasons and was also the co-Most Valuable Player.
He averaged 20.3 points per game and is the fifth-leading all-time scorer for Penn State York.
Magni said Lau is an all-around student athlete.
He maintains a 3.5 GPA and participates in community service, including programs such as Hoops for Heart and the Big Buddy Program.
"Receiving this award has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of people," Lau said.
"It's given me a good start since I will be coming to main campus next year."
Lau said he will try out for the varsity basketball team, but he knows competition will be tough.
"I hope he'll at least get a chance to play basketball at the main campus, but I know there is a big difference in the level of play," Magni said.
"He has aspiration that he will at least go out for the team."
