Wellness Fair provides opportunities to learn about aspects of health

For The Collegian

Answer: Games, massages, and line-dancing senior citizens.

Question: What is the 4th annual Wellness Fair?

"A Healthy Me in 2003" was the theme for this year's fair, which took place yesterday in the HUB-Robeson Center. Information stands set up around the perimeter of HUB Alumni Hall supported the theme, with booths about the seven areas of health: intellectual, environmental, emotional, spiritual, occupational, physical and social.

The Wellness Fair is the final project for students in Kinesiology 492W (Programming for Businesses and Agencies).

"We were kind of nervous, because we've worked all semester for this day," Joslyn Zale (senior-kinesiology) said. "But it seems to be going really well."

Fair visitors could visit a mix of informational and interactive booths from student groups and local vendors. Participants could test their blood pressure and pulmonary function, or move to the next booth and try out their vertical leap and flexibility. RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) for Women offered a self-defense video, while "Love Your Body Jeopardy" gave visitors a chance to learn about dieting and eating disorders.

"We have a lot of students stopping by, and a lot aren't getting some of the questions right," said Ben Snyder (senior-mechanical engineering and bioengineering).

"So we are educating them."

Maria Jones (sophomore-kinesiology) missed a few Jeopardy questions.

"I was so shocked. Some of the percentages [of the answers] were higher than I would have thought," she said.

The fair wasn't all about education though. Visitors relaxed with free mini-massages from the Central Pennsylvania School of Massage, 336 S. Fraser St., and Holistic Associates, 233 Easterly Parkway.

Guests could also participate in taste-testing sponsored by the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Recreation Management. Taste-testers got their choice of a free piece of chocolate peanut butter candy, either with or without soy, for filling out a brief research survey.

A performance by the Silver Spurs Line Dancers, a local group of line-dancing senior citizens, also provided entertainment.

"We hope we made students more aware of themselves and their opinions of health," Snyder said.

Jones said the fair was effective in making her more conscious of her health.

"It was good to see what's out there, the different things available locally. It's an important part of life," she said. "We can't ignore our own health."
