Photography exhibit shocking, outrageous

The article "PSU professor exhibits photographs of male socialization," (April 3) featured the art exhibit In the Company of Men, which promised to display "masculinity." The art exhibit boasted itself as "revisiting masculinity" after 30 years of feminism. As a heterosexual woman, I was looking forward to it. Pictures of soldiers and firemen, like in the infamous picture, "Ground Zero," filled my head.

You can imagine my surprise when I went to find primarily pictures of homosexuality and pedophilia. These were certainly not advertised in the Collegian's article. Pictures included unassuming straight men put into homo-erotic positions (at wrestling practice), men sitting bored in cafeterias or at the prom, pretty men, and men with strippers who appear uninterested in the strippers. Most shocking, however, is a picture of a 20-year-old-looking man and a 6- or 7-year-old boy in what appears to be an erotic kiss.

Pushing the bounds of legality, I do not know how or why the university put such a picture up. I personally found it to be an outrage, especially after Sept. 11 and with our current war, that masculinity is being defined as kissing 6-year-old boys and looking at pictures of objectified men. Students can see this display for themselves in the HUB-Robeson Gallery, as it will be up until April 30. I ask all students to decide if exhibits like these are the "Penn State way." If not, make your voice heard and tell them you will not stand for this kind of exploitation of children and deliberate destruction of heterosexuality.
