Letter to the Editor
SAE members trying to re-establish reputation

Re: "Greek appeals board undermined presidents," April 9 letter.

As a member of the reinstated fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon, I have been offended by the views of some in the university that we ought not be readmitted to the greek community.

The letter writer incorrectly assumes the Sigma Alpha Epsilon brothers knew what was happening. The year in which the offenses allegedly occurred, I was a new pledge spending hours and hours learning about the fraternity and its members, or so I thought. When we convened in the fall for my very first chapter meeting, I found out that a few members had been accused of a number of misdeeds. I was blindsided and noticed all of the members around me shaking their heads in disbelief as well.

To avoid a similar situation in the future, the Interfraternity Council (IFC) would need to require every fraternity to provide a dossier about each member of their fraternity to every rushee. Should we approach the brotherhood with such cynicism? Doesn't that undermine what it means to be a brother?

My brothers and I will be starting fresh in the fall. As a leader of the fraternity next year, I have great reverence for what Sigma Alpha Epsilon stands for and every brother who is affiliated with the Penn State chapter. We look forward to re-establishing our fraternity's good name with the IFC, the rest of the greek community, prospective members, the State College borough and the university.

member, Sigma Alpha Epsilon
