As fishermen try their luck on opening day of trout season tomorrow, they can expect at least one thing: more.

Nobody ever would have expected a man who spent his early career prosecuting those on death row and wrote a book advocating Capital Punishment to work against the very system he helped to impose in Pennsylvania.

Imagine a world where buildings and other creations are environmentally friendly as well as beautiful. If it's hard to conjure up a mental picture, visiting the 10th Annual Green Design Conference might help.

Wearing tank tops one day and jackets the next, students are struggling through extreme daily changes in the weather.

Pennsylvania's state prison population increased by 5.8 percent between June 2001 and June 2002, according to statistics released by the U.S. Department of Justice. State prisons nationwide have increased by about 1 percent, which has pushed the U.S. prison population to over 2 million for the first time.

Patrons stopping for a quick cup of coffee at the Cheese Shoppe, 234 E. Calder Way, won't have to worry about getting a parking ticket anymore.

The fourth annual Space Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow in HUB Alumni Hall. Attendees can explore exhibits related to Penn State research as well as participate in interactive activities for all ages.

SPORTS

Sharif Chambliss, the Penn State men's basketball team's senior-to-be guard has received a release from his basketball scholarship and will transfer to Wisconsin. The announcement came in a press release sent out by the Penn State Sports Information Department at 10:09 p.m. last night.

In the winter, Penn State's Multi-Sport Complex is host to some large NCAA invitationals. It's one of the better facilities in the country and the demand to be able to run there is high because of its quality. Penn State also has a top-notch outdoor facility in the Nittany Lion Outdoor Track, yet doesn't get to host as many meets, particularly for the women's team.

On Wednesday during the last practice before the NCAA Championships, four words stood out among the rest on the chalkboard in the White Building Gymnastics Facility. Those words -- prepare, believe, execute and win -- describe what the Penn State men's gymnastics needs to do in order to win its 11th National Championship.

It all went by so quickly.

The Penn State women's tennis team looks to shake up the Big Ten rankings this weekend as it faces off against Northwestern and Wisconsin in the last two home matches of the season.

Time off can be a negative thing if a team is riding the waves of success, but on the flip side, a break may be the perfect remedy for the Penn State women's lacrosse team.

ARTS

Hip-hop is about to break into the State College music scene in a big way, compliments of the eclectic styling of the new local funk rock band, L-Run.

Jubilantly minimalist, The White Stripes is often praised for its bare-bones approach to bastardized blues, ripping apart the entire framework of a song and leaving the meager guitar-drums-vocals elements to sear an impression in the listener's ear.

Some books have an uncanny ability to stir up images in readers' heads.

I can think of no greater compliment for The Allman Brothers Band after almost 35 years in the scene than this: The group still sounds like The Allman Brothers Band.

How can they make a whole movie that takes place in a phone booth? This was the question asked by friends of mine last week when I described to them the new Colin Farrell flick, Phone Booth. Answer? Easily and successfully.

Idlewild is going to be huge. Own the globe, it will. At least, that's what people are saying.

American Hi-Fi titled its latest release The Art of Losing quite appropriately.

Recent Penn State graduate Luke Davin will bring his honors thesis to life in the form of a musical play.
