Hip-hop is about to break into the State College music scene in a big way, compliments of the eclectic styling of the new local funk rock band, L-Run. Jubilantly minimalist, The White Stripes is often praised for its bare-bones approach to bastardized blues, ripping apart the entire framework of a song and leaving the meager guitar-drums-vocals elements to sear an impression in the listener's ear. Some books have an uncanny ability to stir up images in readers' heads. I can think of no greater compliment for The Allman Brothers Band after almost 35 years in the scene than this: The group still sounds like The Allman Brothers Band. How can they make a whole movie that takes place in a phone booth? This was the question asked by friends of mine last week when I described to them the new Colin Farrell flick, Phone Booth. Answer? Easily and successfully. Idlewild is going to be huge. Own the globe, it will. At least, that's what people are saying. American Hi-Fi titled its latest release The Art of Losing quite appropriately. Recent Penn State graduate Luke Davin will bring his honors thesis to life in the form of a musical play.
