Club members excluded, but not former Olympian

Re: "Spanier's IM win creates a 'racquet' for opponents," April 7 article.

Playing against Fredina Ingold and her partner Graham Spanier in the intramural (IM) racquetball championship was an unbelievable experience. Although we lost in the finals, my sister Aliza and I came out of the loss happy that we were able to play against a former Olympian like Ingold. She was very humble after their victory and no one who lost to them in the tournament should be bitter.

The issue is not whether an Olympic gold medal winner should be allowed to compete in an IM tournament, but rather, why certain Penn State students are not. Currently, racquetball club members with two or more years of club experience are ineligible, while Ingold is able to partake in the tournament. Club members are excluded from the tournament because IM sports are meant to have intramural participants.

According to eligibility rules, Ingold is eligible to play because it has been more than one year since she competed at a professional level. Either Ingold and club members should both be allowed to play or neither should be able to participate. I believe Ingold should be allowed to play along with racquetball club members so that the winners are Penn State's true champions.
