Greek Week to bring unity

Collegian Staff Writer

Musical instruments will not be necessary when members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) perform at a step show at 6 p.m. Saturday in Eisenhower Auditorium.

CORRECTION: Lori Ebert will speak at 8:30 tonight in 100 Thomas. The AIDS Walk will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday in Central Parklet.

It's just one of the many events of this year's Greek Week festivities.

"The step show is the showcase of the NPHC fraternities and sororities," Richard Tan (junior-finance) said. "Stepping is a very historical and cultural thing for the NPHC."

The step show competition will cost $12 and is open to the public.

Greek Week events
Selected events in Greek Week include:
Lip Service, 7 tonight, Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center
Speaker Lori Ebert, 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, 101 Thomas
NPHC Step Show, 6 p.m. Saturday, Eisenhower Auditorium
AIDS Walk, 1 p.m. Sunday
Greek Oscars, 7 p.m. Sunday, Atherton Hotel

"This year is the first time that the step show is being incorporated with [the Interfraternity Council] and Panhellenic," Kristen King (junior-English) said. "Everyone involved is usually very excited to represent their organization and very competitive. They are just battling out to find who's the best step team."

Greek Week, formally known as Spring Week, is an annual Penn State tradition and will include the step show along with new activities.

Unlike Spring Week, Greek Week will include members from the IFC, Panhellenic Council, NPHC and the Multicultural Greek Council.

"It's going to be like last year's Spring Week and this year we're incorporating all four greek councils so that's where we got our theme -- unity redefined," Amy Deatrich (junior-speech communication and broadcast journalism) said. "The focus of the week is mostly service and just to improve the greek image at Penn State."

Along with service projects, some events for fraternity and sorority members are competitively based.

"The lip sync contest called Lip Service is going to be just like MTV's version based on costume accuracy, crowd excitement and dance routines," King said. "That's the first time we're doing that, so that's really big."

Festivities span throughout the week ending April 13 and include events such as a an AIDS walk, a day of service and a speech from Lori Ebert, who will talk about improving the negative image of the greek community.

"On Thursday we have the day of service where we are holding a [canned food] drive all day," Deatrich said. The drive will be held in the HUB-Robeson Center.

Greek Week will end with Greek Oscars, a ceremony that gives awards for the week's events, and the AIDS walk.

The walk begins at 1 p.m. on April 13. All participants must be registered to walk.

Registration forms are in 217 and 218 HUB or at the AIDS Project, 315 S. Allen St., Suite 116. The Greek Oscars will be held at 7 p.m. at the Atherton Hotel, 125 S. Atherton St.

"This [week] is to have a good time but also to spread cultural awareness and general greek awareness. This is not just a week of fun, but it is also educational through the speaker, the days of service and the AIDS walk," Tan said. "We want to create a better awareness of what greeks are."
