Pride Week helps create safety, support for gays
I would like to thank Mr. Moore for his column "Pride Week should work toward making homosexuality a non-issue" (April 2). Now when someone finds out that I'm gay, they can simply assume that I'm promiscuous and I'll ---- anything that moves. How great it was of him to clear up confusion people may have when they first meet me. Seriously though, Mr. Moore's harsh opinions have done more damage to gay culture than the problems he listed. The AIDS epidemic taught us that safe sex was an issue that everyone needs to recognize, not that gays sleep around a lot. Also, just because men are more sexual in nature does not make them promiscuous. Everyone is human, and all humans are sexual, there's nothing wrong with this. Being sexual and having sex are two different ideas. I was most disturbed, however, by Moore's view of the upcoming Pride Week. I am not very involved with the celebration's production, and it seems Moore isn't either. I believe that there is more to Pride Week than gays shouting a forceful acceptance chant and being outrageous. Speaking out about being homosexual is necessary, as it creates the first step in creating that safe environment that Mr. Moore feels we need. If gays do not speak out, society will not realize that we are here, and will not see any need to support us. I am proud to be gay, it is a part of myself that I want to include in all aspects of my life. Brad Gallagher
