Contact representatives to talk about tuition

I would like to clear up a common misconception among college students about politicians ("USG candidates need to address tuition issues, lobbying Harrisburg," March 27 column). We do want to hear from you and care about your interests. I can only speak for myself, but I think most state legislators would be thrilled to hear from a constituent who is 18 and concerned about the rising cost of tuition. I would welcome such a call or letter because they are so rare.

Last year, I heard from one student in my district concerned about decreased funding for higher education. The concern was valid; last year Penn State approved its highest tuition hike in 20 years. I opposed that specific budget because of the hit to higher education and other areas, but maybe those who supported it would have changed their minds had they heard from you.

The governor recently proposed a budget with widespread statewide cuts, including a 5 percent funding decrease for higher education. The republican majority supported that budget proposal and allowed only one amendment, sponsored by the republican leadership, and prohibited other House members from attaching amendments.

To compensate for this most recent cut, Penn State may have to incorporate a tuition increase of 6.5 percent or about $520. Call, write or e-mail your legislators early in the budget process, making sure to contact those representing the district you are registered in.

If you are a registered voter in your home district, contacting me or anyone else in Centre County doesn't help much. The price of a college education will keep increasing. You can help slow it down or even increase the funding that Penn State gets by voicing your opinion. We really do listen.

Rep. Mike Hanna
D-Clinton/Centre
