Athlete's punishment doesn't protect victim
Re: "Phillips did not violate eligibility," March 26 article. Maybe someone out there can explain to me how someone who accepted responsibility for charges of sexual assault gets expelled for only two semesters from Penn State, which is approximately eight months. That's only eight months of security for the poor victim, and the rest of the women here at Penn State. This woman was strong enough to report this incident (something that many other women never feel strong enough to do) and the result is a consequence of almost nothing, because in eight more months she's going to have to pass this man on campus, and see him and know that he took something from her that will last a lot longer than eight months. I don't believe Penn State should allow someone who accepted responsibility for charges of sexual assault on its campus ever again, but at least give this woman the respect enough to keep him out of Penn State until she graduates and doesn't have to worry about facing him, which I'm sure she will worry about every single day. Whoever made the decision to let him back on campus obviously doesn't understand the kind of fear, pain and absolute embarrassment that occurs when someone is raped. Now, other girls will be more reluctant to come forward knowing that it won't do very much good and might not be worth it. I hope to God this doesn't have to do with the fact he's on the football team, because not even the amount of money that the team brings in during a season could come close to compensating her for what she's suffered.
