Eight-match win streak ends for men's tennis team

Collegian Staff Writer

The streaks have ended.

The Penn State men's tennis team had its eight-match winning streak broken by No. 23 Indiana this past Saturday. By winning the Hoosiers stopped their own two-match losing streak. The Hoosiers also picked up the doubles point for the first time in six matches. The Hoosiers won overall 6-1.

The Nittany Lions (12-4, 2-2 Big Ten) came close to winning the doubles match by the first pair Roddy Cantey and Clint Keithly winning. But Indiana (11-3, 3-0) had different ideas and shut down the Lions, winning the last two.

"Doubles was really close," Penn State men's tennis coach Jan Bortner said. "We came up short and it gave the momentum to Indiana."

Already up 1-0, Indiana strengthened its lead when the No. 2 and 6 singles players defeated Mark Barry and Matt Frakes. The Hoosiers' Zach Held then beat Cantey, which clinched the win for Indiana.

Nate Emge was the only Lion to come away with a point for the team. He beat Jakub Praibis in a short match. Praibis retired early in the second set due to a thumb injury that he aggravated. Freshman Malcolm Scatliffe and sophomore Clint Keithly came close to scoring for the Lions, but both players lost in tiebreakers.

The streak was lost for the Lions, but that didn't have an effect on how they went into play. Bortner said the team wasn't thinking about it and takes it one team at a time. The team's slogan for this year has been 'The Time is Now.'

"The match was closer than the score indicates," Bortner said. "Our execution in doubles was a little suspect. We had a lot of double faults and didn't play at the net."
