When Penn State students go to the polls to elect their next Undergraduate Student Government (USG) president and vice president tomorrow, they must choose the ticket that offers the strongest leadership, experience, vision and accountability. Presidential candidate David Davis and his vice presidential running mate Sara Ryan are those leaders.
Davis and Ryan have the most combined internal and external USG experience. They are strong student leaders in diverse groups across campus. Davis has worked in close conjunction with various USG branches as Black Caucus president and Ryan has been in high-ranking cabinet positions in other administrations.
Davis and Ryan have proven their dedication, ability and follow through. They have been accountable in their other leadership positions, and we trust they will be as USG leaders.
They also have a strong vision for their posts. We find their platform idea of online teacher evaluations particularly exciting.
Other candidates have proposed posting the current evaluations online, but this might put pressure on faculty to give higher grades or less difficult work so they receive positive feedback. Davis and Ryan, however, propose publicizing surveys with specific information about teachers and courses that will help students know if the course is right for them, not just the easiest A. Survey information will include teaching styles, class materials, course recommendations and more.
Davis and Ryan also have effective communication skills, making them strong candidates to approach administrators, community leaders and politicians on behalf of Penn State students.
Although we think Davis and Ryan can best represent students overall, we also recognize the strengths in some of their competitors. We hope that if elected, they will consider some of the ideas, enthusiasm, experience and leadership that these opponents offer.
We support Ian Rosenberger and Takkeem Morgan's ideas to extend hours of library rooms and add "blue light" emergency phones downtown.
Students have an important responsibility to this university tomorrow. They must choose leaders who can bring fresh ideas to USG and have the leadership ability to accomplish them. Davis and Ryan have the track record that proves they can fix the communication and vision problems we see in the current student government. We look forward to their leadership.
