It is extraordinarily sad that the State College Police Department wastes its time arresting persons whose acts are personal and should not be within the public realm for prosecution. "Keep your laws off my body," says the slogan of pro-choice advocates. Yet, some don't understand how deeply this sentiment should go.
With the Supreme Court to hear a case on a homosexual sex ban shortly, everyone should begin to question the antiquated laws of a government that tries to control the morality of consenting adults.
I believe that individuals should be free to make choices for themselves and to accept responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make. Personal responsibility is discouraged by government denying individuals the opportunity to exercise it. In fact, the denial of freedom fosters irresponsibility. Unrestricted consensual sexual relations are fully in line with a society that can truly call itself free. This includes solicitation for sex.
While troops fight in "Operation Iraqi Freedom" our freedoms at home have diminished more and more. Ashcroft is prosecuting head-shop owners for selling items that may or may not be used to consume drugs. The Department of Homeland Security is a monstrosity of an over-bearing unchecked executive that wants us all to spy on our neighbors. And in State College, the over-zealous local police harass those who are enjoying their freedom of the week's end, and entrap a local high school student. It seems that if our quest to free the Iraqi people from an oppressive ruler follows in our footsteps, they may well end up in a situation all too familiar in the future.
