Students milk cows on TLC dating show

Collegian Staff Writer

This is the true story of two Penn State students picked to go on a blind date and have their lives taped.

If it sounds like a reality show, that's because it is. TLC's A Dating Story singled out two of Penn State's eligible and unattached individuals to appear on its special college series this week.

Neither Andy Reinaker (junior-management science and information systems) nor Jillian Parry (junior-biobehavioral health) had ever been on a blind date before. But both were willing to try it out, even if that meant being followed around by a camera crew for a few days.

Reinaker said his sister Elizabeth, a devoted fan of the show, insisted he go on the date.

"Once I told her about it, I kind of lost my choice in the matter," Reinaker said. "She said I had to do it because she and her friends love the show and watch it all the time."

Reinaker said he wasn't very nervous because he didn't enter into the situation looking to start a serious relationship.

On the date, the pair milked cows and drove a tractor at a dairy farm in nearby Spruce Creek. The date concluded with a stop for ice cream cones at the University Creamery.

"Sky diving was my suggestion, but I guess a farm was the next best thing," he said. "I wouldn't have come up with the idea, nor do I think milking cows is a romantic date, but it was fun."

Reinaker said the conversation between him and Parry flowed well, and he felt like they had a lot in common.

"I thought she was very cute," he said. "Jill has stunning eyes -- that's one of the first things I noticed."

Although Reinaker said he found the cameras to be a bit tiring at times, Parry said she was prepared for them and didn't mind so much.

Parry, who was Miss Teen USA 2000, said she wanted to go on A Dating Story because there are so many students at Penn State and thought it would be fun to meet someone new.

"Andy was really nice," Parry said. "It wasn't awkward at all. He made it very comfortable."

Parry, who is now studying abroad in England, said it wasn't the best time for her to start up a relationship, but she would definitely hang out with Reinaker again.

Also having gone on his own path, Reinaker has been interning for Shell Oil Co. this semester in Houston. He also expressed an interest in going out with Parry again.

Chad Parvus (senior-journalism), who, like Reinaker, is a member of Sigma Pi fraternity, interned at A Dating Story last summer and told Reinaker about the show. Parvus served as production manager for the episode.

"It may not have turned out to be a love connection," Parvus said. "But it's really difficult on these shows. There's so much pressure."

It's also hard to ignore the camera crew, sound technicians and the fact that there will be thousands of viewers across the nation watching the date every step of the way.

"Maybe there were no fireworks, but I can definitely see them as being friends," he said.

Reinaker and Parry's dating story airs at 1 p.m. today on TLC.
