New PSU sports show to air today
Run and produced by students, the show, called In The Game, will replace CNN in the HUB-Robeson center at 12:15 today.

For The Collegian

At 12:15 p.m. today in the HUB-Robeson Center, the premiere of Penn State's first student-produced sports show, In The Game, will replace the routine CNN news on the big-screen TV.

"The show is going to be everything you ever wanted in a sports show," said David Speers (junior-integrative arts), the show's creator and co-executive producer. "It demonstrates intensity and passion for sports."

Speers said that the show is based on Fox Sports' Best Damn Sports Show Period.

"We'll talk about what's going on across the world and we're going to tie national headlines in with Penn State sports," Speers said.

In The Game will feature guests, segments, and discussions among the hosts.

Reggie Walker (junior-telecommunications), a running back for the Penn State football team, Chris Korman (junior-english), a sports writer for The Daily Collegian, Jason Ashworth (senior-telecommunications), and Angelina Banks (sophomore-broadcast journalism) will serve as the show's hosts.

"These people are obsessed with sports, SportsCenter, and ESPN," Speers said. "That's all they do."

Ashworth is a host for "Lion Sports Blitz" on Penn State's WKPS-FM and also served an internship for the Best Damn Sports Show this past summer.

"I have a lot of experience with television and radio," Ashworth said. "Working for the Best Damn Sports Show, I did not have a specific job, but I had a lot of interaction with the hosts."

Speers felt there was an opportunity to fill with a lot of people at Penn State being passionate about sports. He said getting the show off the ground is the biggest challenge.

"There is usually a lot of hype at first, but then when we really get to work, people drop out, but my sports staff has been pretty dedicated," Speers said.

Speers works with Blake Berson (freshman-film/video), who serves as the lead editor and co-producer. Berson produces and edits segments for the Bryce Jordan Center and Beaver Stadium.

"A school with such support for athletics should have a show that reflects that passion," Berson said in a press release. "And we want to give that to Penn State."

Kelly Mazzante of the women's basketball team will be a guest on the premiere of the show.

Michael Robinson of the football team is also expected to appear on the show, as well as other Penn State coaches and athletes.

The show will feature a segment called: "Beyond the Bleachers," which will take fans behind the scenes and show them things they wouldn't normally get to see, Speers said. In-depth coverage will be provided on issues such as sports medicine, rehabilitation, and facilities.

The show will also cover club and intramural sports that otherwise do not receive much attention.

In The Game is a production of the Penn State News Magazine Club. The club is hoping to air some future shows including a talk show, a sketch comedy show, a blind dating show, and possibly a student sitcom.

There will be six shows of In The Game.

The show will air on Channel 8 on campus on Mondays at 7 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m.

"It's an opportunity to bring the campus together and any way to do that is great," Speers said.
