Penn State is hoping for a repeat of its last tournament performance where the No. 40 Nittany Lions came away with the tournament victory.
The women's golf team is in the midst of the rain-soaked Waterlefe Invitational in Tampa, Fla. After the first round, the team is in third by shooting a 304. The University of South Florida, the host school, is in first with a 302. The University of Louisville is in second with a 303. The Lions are hoping to make up the two shots by continuing their tradition of finishing strong.
Seniors Katie Futcher and Meghan Mull and freshmen Amber Weinerth and Katrin Wolfe each shot four over par 76 in the first round to tie for 14th place. Senior Keri Dugan follows with a tie for 45th place and a first round score of 81.
In the last tournament, the team captured the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational championship in the final round by cutting 11 strokes off of its game. However, this course may be a little more challenging than the straight-forward Tuscawilla course. The Waterlefe Golf Course is a par-72, 6,000-plus yard course that is a virtual pond with a golf course thrown in the middle.
Penn State coach Denise St. Pierre said that this particular course is located in a swampy area, and that there is basically water on every hole, thus creating a more difficult game for the golfers. "It's an extremely demanding course," St. Pierre said.
The final round begins tomorrow morning, and will end by nightfall.
