The Penn State women's tennis team is on a roll. Winning their last six matches in a row, the Nittany Lions have improved their record to 6-5 overall, passing the .500 mark for the first time this season.
The women have scored their past six victories against Michigan State, Maryland, Temple, American, Northern Arizona and Florida International.
"We are doing really well, we finally have a winning record," said junior Leigh Ann Merryman. "We are working on being competitive. Our doubles points have been key in all of our victories."
The women have received strong play from the doubles pairings of senior Judy Wang and sophomore Megan Marton, and the No. 1 duo of sophomore Maaria Husain and Merryman.
The women are also receiving stellar play from singles player freshman Lindsay Downing.
The women played strong against opponents Northern Arizona and Florida International this past weekend in Tempe, Ariz., despite the change to outdoor courts.
"Going from indoor to outdoor is a tough transition," said Downing, an Arizona native. "But with the weather getting warmer, we have to get used to it."
The women are able to play on outside courts once the temperature reaches 42 degrees.
"The courts are causing us to be a little more patient than normal, our footing is slower and it can be a frustrating battle," Merryman said. "But we are pushing ourselves."
Since February, the women have worked on confidence and playing harder in matches.
"We have been practicing very hard, we had the past two days off which was a nice break, but we have our sites set," Downing said. "We know that we can pretty much accomplish anything, and that we are a team, and if one of us is struggling there are always seven other girls to help."
That team attitude has proven beneficial, with the 6-0 run as proof.
The women are looking to continue the streak this weekend when they to travel to Blacksburg, Va., where they will compete against Virginia Tech and Old Dominion.
