I think the article about Elizabeth Smart may have been a little misleading towards the Mormon religion ("Smart case revisits Mormon polygamy link," March 17). I think with as much attention as she is getting recently it needs to be made clear that Mormons do not support polygamy in any way whatsoever.
I am a member of the Latter Day Saints church and it is so disheartening to see how many people still believe in such a ridiculous thing. When people find out that I am Mormon, the first question I usually get is "Are you going to have more than one husband?" (which was something Mormons never did to begin with) or "Are your parents polygamists?"
Mormons a lot of the time get the wrong kind of attention in the media and seem to be only known for the so- called polygamist beliefs. Yes, there are people out there who call themselves Mormon who have taken on plural wives but they are in no way recognized by the church.
Another thing that people often believe about the Mormon religion is that we are a cult. I think it needs to be made clear that we are just like any other religion. The outfits that Brian David Mitchell was wearing and the veils he had Elizabeth and his wife wearing is not something we do as a church. The man who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart is obviously a sick man.
Though it is still unclear what the exact details are about her disappearance, it needs to be made clear early on what Mormons are really about and what we aren't, which are polygamists.
