Letter to the Editor
Time has come for U.S. to act as peacekeepers

When President George H.W. Bush succeeded in protecting Kuwait from Saddam Hussein in 1991, the United Nations passed a resolution mandating the disarmament of Iraq within 15 days.

Since that time, Hussein has ignored 17 U.N. resolutions while stockpiling biological, chemical and possibly nuclear weapons. Clearly, he feels immune from international governing bodies and their mandates.

Citizens of Iraq possess no freedom to question this man and his policies for fear of murder, rape or torture. Contrary to popular current opinion, the United States has never waged a war with a goal of conquering another nation, rather each and every time, our government has sought to liberate and protect other people who have been denied freedom and liberty at the hands of tyrannical dictators such as Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Manuel Noriega and Saddam Hussein.

Assuming that the Iraqi people prefer the Bath party and Saddam Hussein to democracy and free elections is ludicrous. If they had opportunities such as we do, they would have rid themselves of this man many years ago.

However, the time for internal coup has long passed, and once again the United States must do our duty, and act as a beacon of freedom.

The United Nations has failed miserably to enforce its own resolutions, most recently 1441, and therefore, the United States must assume the role, once again, of international peacekeepers.

Finally, ask yourself this question: Where did France stand against Hitler in the 1930s, and where did France stand before Operation Desert Storm? Thankfully, the United States operated as an independent nation then, as we are preparing to do again in the near future.
