Lions' Donohue still dominating
The senior gymnast has been on a hot streak for the past month, winning the all-around in each of Penn State's last three meets.

If the month of March comes in like a lion, its name must be Kevin Donohue.

After a slow start in the beginning of the year, the Penn State senior has found his groove and has been dominating competitions throughout the past month. Donohue has been perfect in the last three meets, winning the all-around in each and helping lead the men's gymnastics team to an undefeated season thus far.

"The first meet I started off pretty rough, but I am happy to have turned it around," Donhoue said. "It's my senior year and I want to go out on a good note especially after having a great season last year."

Donohue's consistent performances week after week began after he competed in the 2003 Winter Cup Challenge on Feb. 8. Donohue finished ninth in the all-around competition while winning gold on the vault with a 9.400.

"It was definitely a very intimidating meet competing against the best guys in the country," Donohue said. "It wasn't one of my best meets, but I felt like I was still competitive."

With Donohue finishing ninth and not having one of his best meets, he came back from the Winter Cup with the motivation to improve his difficulty and become more consistent in his routines. The following week his hard work paid off as he finished first in the all-around with a score of 54.200 in the tri-meet against Temple and the University of Illinois. But Donohue didn't stop there.

In the very next meet against Ohio State, Donohue once again won the all-around competition with a season-high 54.750. He also posted a season-high 9.750 on the high bar. Penn State men's gymnastics coach Randy Jepson said that Donohue hadn't hit that high bar routine once in practice prior to the competition.

Although Donohue has improved over the past month, he says that he hasn't peaked yet and is becoming more consistent with his routines each week.

"Each week I gain more and more confidence," he said, "and it's starting to get to the point where I look forward to each Saturday night to compete."

However, Donohue's biggest weakness this season has been his strength. He has been working hard to get stronger to increase his start value on the rings, but he says it has been a long process and one that doesn't offer immediate rewards.

While Donohue tries to improve his strength, the vault has been his strongest event.

"I'm very confident with my vault and I feel like I'm in cruise control everytime I compete in the event," Donohue said.

Donohue's success on vault can be attributed to his intense training over the summer for the U.S. Individual Event World Championships Intra-Squad Competition in October where he finished first in the vault, the only event in which he competed.

Although Donohue has dominated meets in the past month, he credits his success to his teammates and feels that if he's not on top of his game, there are others that can step it up.

"We don't just have a one-two punch, but three or four solid all-arounders," Donohue said. "It's reassuring that when you go out on a routine and fall, there's five guys equally as good to pick you up."
